A big thank you to Carmen Ensinger and the Greene Prairie Press for the article shared below.

JV Football game vs. North Greene on Monday, 9/23 has been cancelled.
Earlier this school year, Mrs. Janis Meyer was cleaning out boxes in a storage area at Greenfield Elementary. To her surprise, she discovered old records, many of which are from one-room schoolhouses throughout Greene County. The oldest was from 1908. One of the first ones she discovered was from Oakland School from 1911 where she found an entry for Carson McClelland. Mrs. Meyer knew we had a current 6th grade student with the same name so she reached out to his grandmother for more information. She soon found out that Carson McClelland from 1911 is our current Carson McClelland's great-great-grandfather. In fact, Mrs. Meyer found that our current Carson is the fifth generation of McClellands to attend Greenfield schools: Carson, William, Stanley, Kyle, and Carson. The McClelland family still owns the ground the Oakland school used to stand on. Mrs. Meyer also discovered her own grandmother's name as a teacher in one of the school houses from 1925. Esther L. Scharfenberg, her maternal grandmother, attended Illinois State University in 1924 after graduating from Greenfield High School. She began her teaching career shortly after in a local one-room schoolhouse. She even found one of her old gradebooks scribed in her own handwriting. Mrs. Meyer also has five generations who have graduated from GHS beginning with Esther Lily Scharfenberg Baker, Kate (Baker) Baldes Moore, Carla (Baldes) Plogger Winters, Marc Plogger, and Samantha (Plogger) Bushnell. We are sure that there are many other families with 5 plus generations who have graduated from GHS. We plan to have many of these old records on display at Greenfield High School while celebrating the 100th birthday of GHS at homecoming. Greenfield High School will be open after the homecoming parade (about 4:00 p.m.) until 6:00 p.m on Friday, October 11, 2024 to celebrate its 100th birthday. Anyone interested in adding to the list of generational families attending Greenfield Schools may do so in the library during the birthday celebration while viewing many of these old records. We will have punch and cookies for visitors as well. Please contact the Greenfield High School office for any questions. Carson McClelland (1911) and Carson McClelland (2024 6th grader at GES) pictures can be found below. Thank you to Mrs. Meyer and the McClelland family for their research and information!
